There are 3 big leadership challenges that consistently come up for studio owners regardless of whether they have been in business for one year or ten:

1/ I don’t know how to get my team as invested and committed to the studio as I would like.
This may be when they show up 5 minutes before class, they call in sick with hardly any notice or they are always late delivering their music or class plans. Their communication is inconsistent and you feel like you’re banging your head against a wall every week when you need to remind them to mark their class rolls or submit their timesheet. It seems like ‘just a job’ to them.

2/ My teachers aren’t getting the results I expect and I don’t know what to do or say.
Parents may be commenting that the class is too easy, their child is unmotivated or they aren’t being challenged by your teachers. Or perhaps you have walked into their class and wondered why they are sitting on a chair while teaching. They aren’t retaining students or converting trials into enrollments as much as you would like. You know they are a great teacher - it’s why you hired them - but you need them to step up.

3/ I’m too close to my teachers, and it’s impossible to give them feedback without them taking it personally.
They are your Facebook friends and you do love spending time with them, so how can you possibly tell them that their personality is not fitting with your studio’s values and culture? Now, let’s talk birthday parties!

The thought of running a birthday party might make you feel a bit queasy (never work with kids or animals, don’t they say?), but hear me out for a minute. Some studios don’t operate on weekends and if you do, it’s generally Saturday, not Sunday. Birthday parties are another great source of additional income, plus it’s another great opportunity for your ideal new students to be exposed to your space!

True, it is more work, but it’s work you get paid for whether you run them yourself or you simply form a partnership with one or a few local parties companies, in which they can hire the space from you, run the parties, clean up and leave.

Your job? Take the fee and enjoy your weekend!

Alternatively, you can run the parties in house and have your teachers run the party – it’s up to you. I have seen both ways work really well all around the globe. Have a think and make a decision whether you want to create your own party brand or if you want to partner with an existing party business and rent them your space.

Whatever you decide, one tip is to ensure every child who attends the party receives some information about your studio along with an exclusive offer for attending the party. You may give them a magnet or flyer or keyring… think of something they and their parents can keep that encourages them to take action (say, make the offer valid for the next seven days only).

What is one new student worth to your business?

I must admit, it always surprises me that rarely do I meet people who actually know the answer to this crucial question.

Let's work it out together at the most basic level: one student doing one weekly class for the year for 40 weeks is a nice easy place to start. Let’s say you classes are $12 per week, across 40 weeks of the year.

One student, doing one class per week is going to bring in $480.00 each year.

Now let’s imagine this once-per-week dancer joins your studio at the age of 3, and graduates when they are 18. That once-per-week dancer has a lifetime value of $7,200. And guess what we haven't included? All the other products and services your dancers buy.

- Additional classes.
- Costumes.
- Merchandise.
- Recital tickets.
- Camps.
- Birthday parties.
- Private lessons.

With all of these inclusions, the average lifetime value of your once-per-week student is between $20,000 to $30,000.
